Ukay Group Limited is a company with a history
spanning more 22 years. The business originally started in 1979, when Mr Ahfaz
Miah opened a leather garment manufacturers store.
Mr Miah, living in the East End with the other Asian community saw a great need
for the supply of Asian foods. At the time the Asian population had to go to great
distances to buy Asian food supplies. Using profits generated by the successful
leather garments store, Mr Miah opened an Asian food supermarket to cater for
the great need that had developed. The supermarket was a first in the London’s
East End. Since then, many others have followed.
Having played a big role in establishing a food source for London’s Asian community,
Mr Miah turned his attention to another need greatly lacking: clothing. Asian
people have a rich and colourful attire. The westernised clothing styles did not
match that of which Asians were used to. Mr Miah then opened the greatly successful
Ukay International Saree Centre. Today, the saree shop caters for more the just
the Asian community. It boasts customers from all around Europe and other parts
of the world.
The next chapter in Mr Miah’s ventures was the opening of Ukay International Jewellery
Centre. Asian’s have a specific and distinct style of gold and other jewellery.
The jewellery shop today is a great success and is London’s only Bengali owned
jewellery shop.
The final chapter in Mr Miah’s business ventures, up till now, is the Ukay International
Baby and Toddler Centre. The shop sells everything required for babies and infants
sits very close by to all Mr Miah’s other shops.
Mr Miah has made a great contribution to London’s Asian population, solving great
needs that were lacking previously. In the heart of London’s Asian communities,
Mr Miah’s thriving businesses today are very well known throughout the East End.
